Happy National French Fry Day! I didn’t even know that this day was a thing but oh how glad I am that I live in a country where there is a National holiday for FRIES! To celebrate R and I whipped up some homemade french fries and wanted to share our perfectly crispy treats with you!
Because the rustic potatoes are wide some of your curls will come out extremely long. I recommend using your kitchen shears to cut the long curls into smaller curls to eliminate any possibility of you getting burned by hot frying oil.
Be careful not to overcrowd your skillet when adding your potato curls to the hot oil. The curls should be in one layer and should be basically submerged under the oil.
There is something that is so special about homemade french fries, it is almost as though you can taste the love deep fried into them.
Homemade French Fries
Feeds: 5-6 servings | Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 40 minutes | Total Time: 60 minutes
- 4 medium rustic potatoes
- 2.5 cups frying oil (I used Olive Oil)
- 4 TBSP flour
- salt & pepper to taste
In a cast iron skillet begin heating up your oil. For perfectly cripsy fries the oil needs to be at least 375°.
Using your spiralizer, spiralize your potatoes. Once all of your potatoes are spiralized lay the curly potato pieces on a large cutting board (or on a bed of paper towels for easy cleanup!). Sprinkle the flour over the potato pieces. The flour will not completely cover all of your potato pieces, it should be a thin layer as you do not want loose flour to burn in your frying oil.
Once your oil has reached 375° begin adding the potato pieces to the oil. Remember not to over crowd your skillet because this drops the oil’s temperature. After about 30 seconds begin lightly moving the fries around the skillet to make sure that they are not sticking to each other or the bottom of your skillet.
Watch your fries carefully, once they turn your desired golden-brown color (5-8 minutes) remove the fries and place them on a bed of paper towels to catch any excess dropping oil. While your fries are still hot season them with salt and pepper to taste then move your fries to a large serving bowl and cover with foil to keep warm.
You’ll repeat this process until all of your fries are cooked.
Serve and enjoy!
