In high school I used to have the craziest habit of dyeing my hair religiously every six to eight weeks. Why so frequently you ask? Well, I was the crazy chick who was dyeing my hair from blonde to dark brunette! If only my high school self could see my current self, I would probably die knowing that at 25 I have long, naturally blonde hair. Unfortunately, all of that dye took a serious toll and it has taken many years to get my hair back to the soft, healthy and glowing hair it once was long ago -all without the use of any hair dye! Use these products -just as I do- and you’ll be able to get your natural blonde hair back in a few short months!
Start with The Root of The Problem (pun intended).
Obviously if you’re going to go from a brunette to a blonde without hair dye you need to get rid of the brunette hair so, every morning one of the first things that I do is take my Hair, Skin & Nail Vitamins. I have noticed a HUGE difference in my hair and nails since starting these vitamins; my hair and nails grow at an astronomical rate and I’ve also noticed that my hair doesn’t break as easily and is much stronger. It also helps that these vitamins come in gummy form, they taste like candy!
Your Shampoo Matters!
This might seem obvious to most but it wasn’t until I got to college and stopped dyeing my hair when really I learned that the kind of shampoo and conditioner you use is actually very important. Like many women out there I have an arsenal of various shampoos and conditioners in my shower but there are the products that I love the most for my blonde hair.
Every three-ish days or when I know I will be using heat on my hair (blow dry, strightener, etc.) I use John Frieda Sheer Blonde Shampoo and John Frieda Sheer Blonde Conditioner. These products work with the heat to help lighten my hair and protect my natural color without the use of dye.
Another great duo to use for blonde hair is Paul Mitchell’s Blonde Forever Blonde Shampoo and Paul Mitchell’s Blonde Forever Blonde Conditioner. These products clean my hair of any build up and help further strengthen my hair.
Lightening Spray is The Bomb.
The biggest way that I am able to no longer dye my hair is by using lighten spray! Haven’t we all heard stories from our mom’s younger days when she would put lemon juice in her hair while laying out in the sun so she could get lighter hair? This is basically the same thing, just a lot less acidic and much more legit. There are all different brands of lightening spray out there but the spray that I love the most is John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray. I typically use this product 2-3 times a week and definitely only use this when I plan on using heat on my hair (blow dry, strightener, etc.). Don’t forget to spray your hair underneath!
Get That Brassy Color Out!
During this process I would notice that some days my hair would look much more brassy or orange-ish than on other days. The answer to this problem is PURPLE SHAMPOO! Yes, the shampoo is actually purple and when you use it the soap suds are purple too. How does purple shampoo work on brassy shades of blonde you may ask? Well, I answer your question with a question: What is the color opposite of yellow on the color wheel? If you answered purple then you got it! Purple shampoo basically uses natural neutralization to clean out the brassy tones of your blonde. Don’t worry blondes, this happens to all of us! I like to use this product once a week and leave the shampoo in for 3-5 minutes before washing it out.
Protect Your Hair as Much as Possible!
Again, this may seem extremely obvious but I cannot stress enough how important it is to protect your hair. What are you protecting your hair from you may ask? The simple answer is: everything. Heat, brushing, tangles, pulling, pollution, weather, dye, etc. I used to use multiple products that each took care of their own element until a dear friend introduced me to Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle. Y’all this leave-in mist is life changing and protects against basically any element ever AND it smells like vanilla which lasts for days! I use this mist daily, even when I am not planning to use heat on my hair because it seemingly works miracles.
Don’t Use Heat Everyday!
I hate to admit that at one point in my life I was using heat on my hair EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Not because I love standing in front of the mirror in a hot bathroom for an extra hour everyday but because I didn’t really know any alternative ways to style my hair.
If I had to describe my natural hair texture it would be something like: “not curly but not wavy but also not straight”. My hair literally does whatever it wants when it dries naturally; some days I have Shirley Temple spiral curls and other days I my hair is straight as a board. Not You Mother’s Beach Baby Texturizing Sea Salt Spray sets my hair PERFECTLY with waves without the stiffness that gel or mouse causes. Plus, this stuff smells like coconut which takes me to the beach anytime I use it! I recommend letting your hair air dry a bit, and then apply the texturizing spray. #lifechanged
We have all heard that washing your hair everyday is really bad because of “natural oils, blah, blah, blah”. Unfortunately, I have the greasiest hair EVER. No joke, if I wash my hair in the morning then (no matter what) it will be greasy by the time I go to bed that night; if I go to bed with my hair wet then I will wake up with greasy hair. This is a no win situation for me. Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo has been a heaven sent for my greasy hair solution. I have tried MANY dry shampoos but Clean Freak has been the most effective and has never caused me any issues. Plus, I love when my hair turns white and I freak R out by telling him that I have gray hair… HA.
If You Do Have To Use Heat, Your Tools Are Essential!
I secretly whisper “I’m sorry” as I roll my wet hair into my brush and apply heat to it because I know how damaging the heat can be on hair. Investing in a really good hair dryer is very important, especially because (with normal use) we only have to buy hair dryers once every 5ish years, right? This Babylistt Pro Ceramix Xtreme Hair Dryer is perfect as it uses Ionic and Porcelain Ceramic technology and Far-infrared heat to protect hair from damage; this hair dryer also has 3 heat and speed settings and is much quieter than any hair dryer that I have used in the past.
There are a lot of hair straighteners out there and my hair has been victimized by many of them. I love my Chi Flat Iron. This straightener smooths out my frizzy, Houston humid hair. I also love that I can use this iron to curl my hair which cuts down on clutter and cords in the cabinets in our bathroom. And yes, my Chi is pretty in pink!
This is an actual picture of my hair during this process. To be honest to get my hair to the color that it is today I had to be patient, as in 10 months patient. Trust me though, if I can do it -you can do it too!
Until next time,
